Thematic Notebook 5: Parity Democracy
This publication, part of the Collection "Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo and the Challenges of Contemporary Society", brings together two emblematic texts of her thought, delivered at significant moments when she spoke at two international forums, one of a regional nature, within the framework of the Council of Europe, which took place in Strasbourg in February 1995 and which was preparatory to another, of a global nature, within the framework of the United Nations, which took place in September of the same year in Beijing.

The challenge of parity democracy - Women become visible
” Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo was many years ahead of her time. Guided by an idea of positive utopia, that is, by the idea that the possible should be the driving force of human action which should never be guided solely by responding to the immediate present, MLP always sought to interpret problematic issues in terms of creating new horizons for understanding life and human living. In this sense, many of the analyses she made and the solutions she proposed remain relevant and pertinent today. Particularly innovative is the way she sought to re-signify the concept of care, which she rescued from the traditional space of private life, thinking together care and justice, to transform it into an essential ingredient in shaping a new paradigm for politics, within the framework of the idea of democratisation of the political.
The collection Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo and the Challenges of Contemporary Society aims precisely to disseminate some texts where the original contributions of MLP's thought are most paradigmatic and demonstrate her capacity to also address the questions of the world in which we live.”
